The chosen finish for an aluminium louvre affects more than just the appearance. Colour requirements, environmental exposure, durability and long term maintenance can all influence which option is most suitable.
Ventuer offers three primary finish options: powder coated, anodised, and mill finish aluminium. Each has different characteristics and suits different projects.
So, what is the difference?
Powder Coated Aluminium Louvres
Powder coating is the most commonly specified finish for performance louvres.
The process involves applying a dry, electrostatically charged powder to the aluminium surface before curing it under the heat to form a continuous protective coating.
Their biggest upside is flexibility. Powder coating provides a wide range of colour and gloss options, creating a uniform finish across profiles. It also provides good durability and corrosion resistance.
This makes powder coating particularly useful when louvres need to match their surroundings.
Anodised Aluminium Louvres
Anodising works differently.
Rather than applying a coating over the aluminium, the electrochemical process convers the surface into a controlled oxide layer.
The result is a hard, integral finish with a natural metallic appearance and great corrosion resistance. Being a part of the surface itself, it also becomes less prone to chipping or peeling.
Anodising can therefore be particularly useful where durability is a key consideration.
Mill Finish Aluminium Louvres
Mill finish is simply aluminium without a secondary surface treatment after extrusion or fabrication.
The aluminium retains its natural untreated appearance and will gradually oxidise when exposed to the environment.
Because there is no additional protection, mill finish is generally better suited to internal applications, concealed locations or projects where another finish will be later applied.
